Handyman in a Haunted HotelDarrel is a friend of mine who does repairs and maintenance at several haunted buildings in the area. While some may say there are no such things as ghosts, he is convinced that there are. In fact, he says, those he has ran into over the years usually have wonderful senses of humor and enjoy nothing more than playing practical jokes. Last year he was called to help with the re-roofing of an old church that is the home of a ghostly elderly woman. " For no reason I can explain we all called her Margaret. I have to say that she's about one of the orneriest ghosts I've encountered." He explains. "For some reason she took a dislike to one of my assistants and made the poor man's life miserable. No sooner would he put his tools down than she would hide them. She continually untied his shoes and blew cold air on his neck. The poor guy was forever tying his shoestrings. At one point Margaret even tried to give him a nudge as he walked up the stairs. I guess that was all he could take because he quit a few days later. Luckily we got the roof done before Margaret decided to single any one else on the crew out " Repairing an old furnace in the middle of winter is no easy task especially when a spirit decides the furnace shouldn't work. Not intimidated by the stories of ghostly goings on, Darrel drove up the hill to the old hotel and worked for nearly two hours. Finally satisfied that the furnace would provide heat, he clicked the wall thermometer and waited. Nothing. He clicked it again. Once more nothing happened. Darrel says, "I ran down to the basement and found that the heating ducts had been pulled from the wall. 'What are you trying to do freeze these poor people out?' I asked. 'Well it won't work. These folks need some warmth and I'm going to fix this furnace with or without your cooperation.' He called in two helpers and had the furnace ready for operation early the next morning. "When I clicked it on, it worked like a charm. I guess the ghost decided to stop with the silliness." Darrel laughs. Wall to wall carpet is very common in most modern homes. Installing it in a hundred year old haunted home can be a chore. Darrel was called upon to install a bright red carpet in a tiny cottage reputed to be haunted by the spirit of a long dead Madame.
