Ghosts in the CemeteryRecently I was asked to speak to a small group of would-be ghost hunters. During the question and answer session I was asked where I thought the best possible places for conducting ghost investigations were. I polled the audience and without hesitation, they all agreed the number one spot would have to be the local cemetery. It's a common enough belief, but it isn't always the case. Ask yourself this question, "What self-respecting ghost would choose to hang out in a graveyard when he/she could go anywhere?" The answer is not too many. Certainly, there are a few spirits within the cemetery. And some of them are very famous. The lovely apparition of Resurrection Mary has been known to hitch rides with unsuspecting motorists. Eventually she returns to the Resurrection Cemetery in Justice Illinois where she has been seen numerous times over the years. More than once the vivacious ghost of Marilyn Monroe has been spotted in the area near her mausoleum in the Westwood Memorial Cemetery in Brentwood California. Then there is the mystery of the glowing headstone in the Virginia City Nevada's Silver Terrace Cemetery. Many people have seen it glowing in the moonlight but try, as they might, they are unable to determine just whose headstone it is and why it occasionally glows. Don't ever take anything from a cemetery except photographs. Some who've taken bits of headstones in Bodie California have quickly realized there is something to the legend that claims bad luck for any that do so. Thankfully, they usually waste little time in returning the items. Cemeteries offer us a glimpse into history. How we honor our dead, and the words carved upon marble headstones are nothing if not interesting. They are also wonderful for doing photography, still I strongly urge ghost investigators, particularly those new to the field, to find other places to explore first. One problem is vandalism. In an effort to prevent more from occurring, many old cemeteries are now locked up. Permissions and the key must be acquired before entering. Museums could be more haunted than cemeteries. After all it is here where you will find the relics and tools of long dead people. People who may cling to some of their possessions even after death has claimed them. It would probably be difficult not to find a ghost or two, in any old building you can think of. Cemeteries are great, but if ghosts are generally found where people lived and died, it stands to reason that you probably won't encounter many within the cemetery which is really a resting place. A final resting-place.
