"Well…" I winced. "The house isn't that old, there's no violent history…"
She smiled. "It's always the same with you ghost chasing types. You go out somewhere, unknowingly bring a few spirits back, and pretty soon you've got a house full."
" Could that be why my cat, gets upset in the mornings?" I wondered aloud.
"Oh absolutely. Animals and children, they can always tell "
"They must be congenial because I've never been bothered by them." I said.
"Yes, I believe they are." She agreed.
But what if they weren't?
Some folks say that burning sage will chase ghosts away. Others simply tell the spirits to Scat. In fact, there are probably lots of ways to send spirits packing.
A woman I met recently told me the following story.
"When I was a young girl my aunt suffered from debilitating migraines. Anytime one came on there was nothing she could do but pull the shades, sit in near darkness and wait for it to pass. One day a lady from my mother's work came to visit my mother. The talk turned to home remedies and mom told her visitor about her sister's terrible headaches.
The lady looked funny at mom and asked, "Your sister live in an old house?"
Mom nodded. "Yes, but why?"
"Could be, all she needs is to chase some ghosts outta that house."
"Well I don't think the house is haunted."
"That don't mean it isn't. I was you, I'd burn some sage in there, chant a little and demand that those ghosts get the heck outta there."
"Well I suppose we could try it." Mom said, sounding less than convinced.
"It might just end those headache spells." The lady commented.
Later, when mom told my aunt about the sage, she readily agreed. The headaches were such, she was willing to try anything for relief. They gathered their equipment and set about burning the sage while singing some little songs.
Sorry to say, the migraines didn’t go away, but my aunt swore up and down that she slept so much better after the little sage burning ceremony. True or not, she believed it was because the two of them had successfully chased away the ghostly inhabitants in her home. ,Okay, maybe I'm not the most observant person on earth. If there are ghosts in my house, I'd never really noticed before, but a friend who was visiting me the other day commented,
