Ghosts in the Traffic

Aside from mysterious vanishing automobiles that journey a route into oblivion, there are plenty of ghosts on the roads. Tales of ghostly hitchhikers abound, and woe to the unsuspecting driver who stops to pick some of them up. Then there is the story of the elderly crossing patrol guard who sometimes leads children from one side of the street to the other. Even though he's been dead for decades.

More famous, is the railroad crossing in Texas. It seems that a group of school children lost their lives when a train collided with their bus at this particular crossing. To this day their spirits attempt to help motorists in stalled cars by pushing the automobiles across the railroad tracks to safety.

An acquaintance recently told me that she is certain she saw a ghost the other day while driving in one of the city's oldest areas. It was late afternoon, the temperature had climbed to nearly a hundred degrees when she spotted a woman attired in what appeared to be a long, heavy woolen white gown standing forlornly on the corner.

"That's odd." She thought as she drove past. "Who'd be out here in this heat in that dress?"

She looked up to catch another glimpse of the woman in her rearview mirror, but the woman had vanished. Just to be certain, she drove around the block a few times, but there was no sign of her.

This is very similar to a story I was told a few years ago. Suzette (not her real name of course) was sixteen. She'd just gotten her driver's license and her first car. Like most new drivers she was anxious to prove her prowess behind the wheel. Knowing this, her mother, allowed Suzette to taxi her to around town for a few days.

"One afternoon a dense fog rolled in while we were in the mall. Mom offered to drive because visibility was so bad I could hardly see beyond the front of my car. Foolhardy or not, I insisted on driving us home. We were just coming up the hill to our house when this tall woman, all in white, darted out in front of us.

"Watch out!" Mom said nervously.

I applied the brakes and waited for the unavoidable impact. There was nothing. Careful to slip the car into park, I jumped out and ran around to the front of the car.

To my relief and surprise, no one was lying in the street.
