Is Your House Haunted?

"I think my home is haunted, but how can I tell?" It's a question I am asked more than any other. After all, differentiating between paranormal phenomena and other explanations for a noisy home isn't always the easiest task in the world.

Last fall a friend came to be with the story of her sister's haunted new home. "There's just no other explanation. Other than a ghost of course." She insisted.

. "Sometimes they wake up to the sound of someone walking in the hall. But when my brother in law gets up to look around…there's no one there. And my sister has even heard the voices of ghosts laughing and talking….But I don't get it. This is a fairly new house and there's never been any deaths or violence….." Her voice trailed off.

I agreed to help in the quest for ghosts and after a few nights' research we discovered that the "sound of someone walking in the hall" was nothing but an owl that had decided to make occasional nocturnal stops on the couple's roof. The voices were another matter, until we found that teenagers camped out on a nearby hill during the summer and early fall. Even though the hill was a mile or more from the home the young people's voices could still be heard.

But not all ghostly questions are answered so easily. Was it only the wind, as their landlord insisted, or a prank playing spirit that chased a young couple from their home?

"We've checked every nook and every cranny and there's just no reason for those whistling noises." The wife assured me as I entered their home. I looked around at the well-kept duplex and noticed nothing out of the ordinary. At their request I took a couple dozen photos, but no anomaly was forthcoming.

"The landlord says it's the winds whistling through the stove pipe, but I don't believe that for a minute." Her husband added. "One night I got up to check on the baby and I felt someone shove me when I walked into his room"

"And tell her about the time, we came home and found the sugar all over the floor." His wife encouraged.

"We went to the movies and it was raining like crazy, we came running into the house from the garage and she nearly slipped because someone had dumped a whole 5 pound bag of sugar on the floor right there." He said pointing toward the tiny kitchen.
