Haunted Hospitals

By their very nature, hospitals are considered by many to be some of the most haunted places there are. After all, hospitals are where people generally enter and exit the world on a regular basis.

A friend told me this story about a hospital she once worked at. It seems that a patient died on the operating table one afternoon. But moments after being pronounced dead, he startled everyone in the room when he sat up and told them verbatim the conversation that had been going on while he was a "dead man."

The kindly spirit of a floor supervisor haunts another hospital. She has been seen numerous times on the floor that once was her ward. Nurses are well aware of her presence, and patients often ask about the lady with the stern face and kind heart. Many of the nurses on the graveyard shift believe that the ghostly floor supervisor is responsible for patients' buzzers sounding at the moment they die.

One morning a widow stopped at the desk and asked the ward clerk if she would please thank the nice woman who had offered her kindness and comfort at her husband's recent passing.

The clerk nodded and told her that she would be more than happy to do it, provided she give tell her the woman's name. The widow explained that she'd been much too distraught to get her name but proceeded to describe her to the clerk.

The clerk felt the hair rise on the back of her neck as the widow described the ghostly supervisor right down to her clunky buff colored loafers.

Some nurses go into the field believing there is no such thing as a ghost, only to have that belief questioned by the many unexplained things they see in their careers. For example, one young nurse remembers crying her "eyes out" at the death of her first patient, a charming elderly woman with no family or friends.

"She was so sweet and bubbly. I was devastated when I went on duty that night and they told me she'd died. I cried and cried and cried. Finally my supervisor sent me home. I returned to the hospital the next night, and was walking toward the cafeteria when I looked up and saw the old lady.

She was dressed in a royal blue pantsuit, and even though she had been paralyzed from the waist down, she was walking effortlessly toward me.
