Over the years I've received several emails and a few phone calls that ask this very question. Here are some of the questions I've been asked this month.
Last evening I was just sitting down to my dinner when the phone rang with an exasperated caller on the other end.
"I've got a ghost and I don’t know what to do."
First, I asked a few quick questions to satisfy myself that the caller was legitimate and not some seasonal Halloween prankster having fun at my expense. This happens all too often. And besides that, my dinner was getting cold.
Apparently this particular ghost calls the caller on the telephone and demands help in solving his murder. Eerie stuff, but this isn't the first time I've heard of a spirit asking for help in bringing his/her killer to justice.
"He says he is angry and very evil….I know he's strong because I've seen him throw heavy objects across the room."
As a writer, I realize the importance of researching my subject. Consequently, I am a strong believer in finding and if possible, determing the causation of a haunting. Was there in fact a murder committed nearby? Did the crime go unsolved? These would certainly be indicators of a ghostly presence. We talked a while longer and I decided to call in a psychic friend.
After a lengthy conversation with the caller, she did not believe that the spirit is evil, only confused. She determined that the best course of action would be for the caller to assure the spirit that he is understood and will be welcomed into the light.
Apparently this has solved the caller's problem.
I received an email from a writer who wanted to know if orbs are indeed ghosts. I answered that while I am certain that orbs are anomalies, I honestly don't know if they are in fact ghosts. It's a hotly debated issue that has the experts equally divided. The writer wrote back stating "I'm pleased to see that you aren't completely WEIRD! Since ghosts are nothing but the creations of overworked imaginations it is only logical that orbs are NOT GHOSTS!"
We all have our own beliefs. There is no need to argue. I filed the letter in the "You can't win them all folder". Fortunately, it is not a rather large folder.
An interesting email informed me of a tag-along ghost that followed the family from city to city, much as I described in Tag-Along Ghost. "We've come to realize that the ghost means us no harm. Obviously, he must care for us a great deal to follow us from place to place like this…..Now if I could only figure out a way to get him to take out the trash."
