A Thai Ghost Story

According to a friend, the Thai word for ghost is peaa. The peaa often spends the first seven days following death by visiting friends and relatives. The ghost may simply observe them or attempt to communicate with them. Friends and relatives of the newly deceased claim to know when the spirit is near by the sweet aroma of a Thai perfume wafting through the air. This particular perfume is only used on the dead.

After a week the ghost accepts the fact that death has claimed him and is usually not seen or heard from again. If the peaa stubbornly refuses to accept death he will wander about aimlessly for eternity. This is why it is best not to ask, "What is that?" if you hear a strange noise or see a quick flash out of the corner or your eye. It could well be a peaa looking for someplace to haunt.

There was a craftsman who lived in a small village with his wife and children. Every month he journeyed to the city to sell his wares. While he was in the city heavy rains began falling and soon the flooding was widespread. Worried for the safety of his wife and children he decided to return home early.

Unfortunately, there were no taxis or boats to take him home. He was so anxious to get home that he started walking. As night fell, he stopped to rest at the rain-swollen river's edge near a fork in the road. The rains had stopped and thick gray clouds covered the moon. The night's silence was not broken by the sound of man or animal. Even the water seemed eerily still.

As hunger and tiredness overtook him, he let his mind wander.

"If only my wife knew I was returning early. She would send someone to pick me up and I could rest these weary bones…" He said to himself.

At that moment he looked up and saw his eldest brother-in-law slowly paddling his tiny boat toward him.

"How?" He called to the man. " How did you know I would be here?"

"I just did." His brother-in-law said calmly.

He climbed into the boat. "I cannot believe my good fortune at you finding me."

"Yes."

As the boat slowly made its way along the shore, dogs began howling pitifully.

"Something has surely frightened them." The businessman remarked wearily.

"Perhaps." His brother-in-law agreed.

"Is everyone okay back home?" The man asked suddenly worried.
