Ghostly Thespians and Haunted Theaters


The Comedy Store in Hollywood was once the world famous Ciros restaurant, favored dining spot of Hollywood's crème de la crème. Several well-known comedians got their start on the stage of the Comedy Store. In spite of the riotous laughter that rings out during nightly performances, the Comedy Store is haunted. While no one is quite sure just who the ghost is, there are those who insist it is none other than mobster Mickey Cohen.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City, Nevada was originally a local beer brewery. Later the building became a newspaper office, and finally the art center. The favorite hang out for the ghost who lurks about the Brewery Art Center is the black box Theater. Rumor is he isn't above mocking any actor who happens to forget his lines. A long ago thespian, or just a curious patron of the arts? No one knows for sure just who the spirit is.

Edwin Booth, Lola Montez, and Adah Menken all tread the boards at Pipers Opera House in Virginia City, Nevada. In fact some of the most famous entertainers of their time performed at Pipers in the late 1880's. And some of them are still there. Sometimes late at night the ghostly sounds of hilarity and laughter can be heard near Pipers.

California's first theater is located in Monterey. The small building was built in 1840 in the early California style and has a colorful garden in back. The ghost of its builder, Jack Swan, has been spotted in the theater and its garden many times over the years.

It's probably very difficult to let go of fame and glory. Emotions aside, this could be the reason some ghostly entertainers choose to stay on at the theater. Curtain.
