Ghostly Thespians and Haunted Theaters

Nearly every human emotion has been played out on the stages and screens of old theaters. Maybe these highly charged emotions, both real and make-believe, are the reason that so many ghosts choose to haunt theaters. Then again, maybe a few ghostly actors simply crave attention, whether dead or alive.

Ashland Oregon is the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Its fame is worldwide and it's a very popular event with fans of the bard. Many motels, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts are named for his characters. Pomp and pageantry are the order of the day, and tickets are purchased well in advance. Charles Laughton was a fine screen actor who wanted desperately to appear in one of the plays at the festival. Ill or not, he was all set to realize his dream, when he suddenly took a turn for the worse and died.

Apparently death has not kept Mr. Laughton from the festival. His ghost haunts The Elizabethan Theater and has been seen a number of times in and around the theater since his passing.

The Turner Opera House opened its doors in Dayton Ohio on New Years Day of 1866. Three years later the opera house burned to the ground with the exception of its front façade. When the building was rebuilt a few years later the front façade was incorporated into the new building but the name was changed to the Music Hall. In fact the theater has had a few names before its present inception as the Victoria Theatre.

Today the Victoria Theatre in Dayton has the distinction of being the most subscribe to theater in the state of Ohio. But there is a mystery concerning the ghost at the Victoria Theatre. Apparently a young actress stepped from the stage to her dressing room and was never seen again. In life, that is. That was nearly a hundred years ago, and no one is still quite sure what became of her. What they are sure of is that her ghost has been seen and heard in the theater several times since her hasty departure from this world.

Many well-known actors and actresses have learned their craft at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena California. However, it isn't one of the stars that haunts the Playhouse. Rumors are its founder, Gilmor Brown, haunts the building. He probably only wants to make certain that things are as they should be.

A few miles from Pasadena is the Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The theater was built in 1927 by Sid Graumann and has become a well-known Hollywood landmark. The theater is believed to be haunted by the spirits of several children who died in a fire nearby at the turn of the century. Outside the theater the ghost of an elderly man is occasionally seen sadly walking by. The confused ghost is probably that of a character actor who was murdered in the vicinity of the theater in the mid 1980's.
