Haunted Hotels; Where the Ghosts Stay and Play Part One

Next time you travel why not make it a real adventure by staying the night in a haunted hotel? Forget the continental breakfast. What about the ghosts?

Romance gone awry is often the contributing factor to a ghostly guest overstaying his or her welcome. Two examples are poor Mary in Skagway Alaska and Kate in Coronado California.

Mary stayed behind in her hotel room while her betrothed went in search of gold and wealth. Unfortunately she contracted pneumonia and died there in room 23 of The Golden North Hotel before he could return to her. A century has passed and Mary is still awaiting her lover's return. Many guests have told of feeling a chilling presence in room 23 and some have even complained about a dim gray light that glows in the room in the wee hours of the morning.

The Hotel Del Coronado is proud of its ghostly resident, Kate. But her story is a tragic one. In 1893 young Kate accompanied her good-for-nothing husband to California in hopes of a better life. When she found that she was expecting their first child, Kate was ecstatic. But her joy was short lived. One evening she crept down to the Hotel's barroom only to find her husband in the arms of another woman.

Later in their room, Kate confronted him with his unfaithfulness. The man merely laughed, boasted of numerous other conquests, and told her he wanted no part of her or their child. Heartsick, Kate waited for him to return to the barroom, then took her own life in room 302 of the Hotel. Kate has been seen in the hotel many times since that terrible night. Those who've stayed in the room report cold spots and eerie noises. If you wish to stay in Kate's room, remember that the room number has been changed since her death.

Romance of a different sort takes place in Oatman, a small Arizona town some 125 miles from Las Vegas. The town's one claim to fame is the Oatman Hotel where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their wedding night in room 15 some sixty years ago. It would seem that the two of them have decided to let the honeymoon continue into eternity. Over the years many folks have claimed that they heard them giggling like a couple of school kids when the room was otherwise unoccupied. Wonder how Clark explains this to his second wife?
