It's late at night. Somewhere far out at sea a storm is raging. The windswept coast is beset by tall waves that crash against rocks. In the lighthouse, the person whose duty is to warn ships of the impending danger sets to work tirelessly. But this night will be different. The Lighthouse keeper's wife will perish in a terrible accident. Or so one story goes....
And ever since that night, this young woman is said to walk the floors of the lighthouse near Big Sur. During the full moon of warm summer months this lighthouse offers docent led evening ghost tours for those curious souls among us who just can't wait to explore another haunted locale. Located just south of Carmel and Monterey, it is well worth the drive. This ghostly resident is only one of many restless spirits that inhabit lighthouses. It would seem that ghosts like lighthouses almost as much as they do theatres. But why do these restless spirits choose a lighthouse as their residence? There could be as many reasons for this as there are ghosts. The lure of the lighthouse is a strong one. Who hasn't looked at a lighthouse and fantasized what it might have been like to live and work in one? Perhaps it is nothing more than the isolation and the water that attracts these spirits. After all, water, according to some ghost authorities, is a magnet for spirits. Then again it could simply be a matter of unfinished business. A lighthouse keeper stays on after death because of a strong sense of duty. This might well be the case at the Point Pinos lighthouse in Pacific Grove. This lighthouse is open during the summer days. Bring your camera and your recorder. Who knows? You might just catch a ghost or two. Point Pinos Lighthouse is said to be haunted by a ghostly former lighthouse keeper who watches over the place, and makes sure things are shipshape. This could be nothing more than a case of unfinished business or merely a ghost that enjoys the lighthouse. Recently I visited the lighthouse and asked a docent about its spectral residents. He admitted that there are stories and unexplained phenomena such as misplaced items and an occasional sighting. "One Christmas someone even saw a child upstairs." He told us. But, he stressed, he didn't believe in any of it. If your travels take you to Northern California you might not want to miss these two lighthouses near Monterey. Espcially if you're interested in visiting lighthouses that are fascinating as well as haunted. Happy Haunting Go To Page: 1
