A Ghost is...

© Janice Oberding

It's that time of year when ghosts rise from the dark recesses of our interest and go straight to the forefront of media attention. Thanks to Hollywood we all have a pretty good idea just what a ghost is or isn't. But, contrary to Hollywood's ideas of ghostly activity, not all ghosts appear as full body apparitions. A ghost can haunt in many different forms, some more subtle than others. In fact, the majority of phenomena that occur are probably not apparitions at all. Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP is the recorded voices of the dead, the disembodied, and spirits simply wishing to communicate. Ever wander what voices you might be able to record?

And while we are on the subject of voices, I met a woman who thought her house was haunted because she heard her name being called whenever she was alone in the home. No apparitions, flickering lights, cold spots, or moving objects, only her name spoken in a voice that was vaguely familiar. With the help of a sensitive she determined that the spirit of her grandmother was trying to assure her that everything was all right with her. Once she told her grandmother that she understood, the phenomena stopped occurring.

Does the sound on your television or radio turn up or down at will? First check to be certain that the television or radio is working order. Next keep a record of the times and dates the incidents happen. If no logical explanation can be found, it just could be you have a playful ghost on the premises.

Drafts and cold spots are two classic symptoms of a haunting. Again, it is always wise to rule out every logical explanation, before coming to the "place is haunted" conclusion.

Catching a glimpse of shadows out of the corner of one's eye is a sign that a ghost is in residence. I've known investigators that see orbs as well as shadows. Pets are good indicators of ghostly activity. If you've ever watched your cat or dog stare at something you don't see, you know what I mean. It is possible a ghost is responsible for your pet's fascination.

Flickering lights are another classic symptom of a haunting. But this could also be faulty wiring, switches, or power surges. If you've had the problem checked, and or corrected, by a qualified electrician and it continues, chances are good a spirit is trying to get your attention with the lights.
