Top Ten Haunted Places in the US

The other day I was asked to name the top ten haunted places in the United States. This sounded easy enough. So, I stopped and thought a moment, then admitted I would hazard a guess, but how popular such places are or aren't, is a matter of opinion and mine no doubt will differ from others.

While there are probably a number of haunted places worth checking out in every state; some are more famous than others, some also offer more ghostly activity than others. With this thought in mind, I used the following criteria for my selected top ten; how popular a place was with the ghostly community, if the ghost was that famous a person and the amount of activity reported.

It's a safe bet that everyone who is interested in the paranormal has heard of Winchester Mansion in San Jose and Alcatraz in San Francisco Bay. Doesn't it seem that every television show dealing with ghosts eventually makes its way to these locations in Northern California?

For this reason both Alcatraz and Winchester Mansion belong on any list of top ten haunted places. So, what about the other eight?

Election year or not, the White House surely belongs in the top ten. How many times has Abe Lincoln's ghost appeared? And, let's not forget the specter of Dolly Madison who calmly hangs her ghostly laundry.

While in Washington D.C., we should stop and consider Ford Theater. After all, the apparitions of both John Wilkes Booth and Abraham Lincoln are sometimes spotted.

Although I don't believe that every cemetery is haunted, two come to mind when it comes to this list. The first is St. Louis Cemetery in New Orleans where the ghost of Voodoo Queen, Marie Laveau is said to roam. The other cemetery is Resurrection Cemetery, the home of the ghostly Resurrection Mary.

Those who die a violent death are said to sometimes stay on this earthly plane. Perhaps this explains the ghosts of Gettysburg National Park. Here, witnesses have reported seeing numbers of ghosts, still engaged in the Civil War.

What is it about lighthouses that ghostly inhabitants seem to like? Just about any lighthouse you care to name is haunted. In fact, I was hard pressed to choose only one. So, I decided that the Haceta Head Lighthouse at Florence Oregon and the Point Pinos Lighthouse in Pacific Grove would tie. These lighthouses are said to be haunted by more than one ghost.
