Writing About Horses

© Renee Landkamer

The only reason this topic came up is, one way or another, there will very soon be a position open for a Contributing Editor for Getting Started With Horses. That's right, I'm quitting. I may be moving to another topic, but I'm not sure if I'll get the position.

So how do you write about horses? That's simple! The same way you write about any other non-fictitious topic. Read a lot. Gain experience (work with horses). But come on! There has to be more!

There is. Learning to write comprehendible and entertaining articles (can you see that I don't fill the bill? teehee). How do you talk? You don't talk like this: "The genus Equus is very intriguing. The specimens range from the Zebra to the Domestic Horse." You'd say something more like this: "Members of the Genus Equus (horses and similar animals) are very interesting to learn about. They range from the Zebras, which still run wild over the plains of Africa, to the horses you and I are familiar with." Alright, maybe you DO talk like the first. But the second is far more pleasant. Editors are not writing textbooks, so their articles should not read like textbooks.

Can you write fiction in your articles? I wouldn't suggest it. I love writing fiction, but it just doesn't fit in an educational setting (which is one reason I'm quitting - I gotta stretch my imagination). Sure, you may write of your experiences in a slightly fictionalized format (please note that I have NOT done this), but aside from that, forget it.

How long should an article be? One to two written pages, or maybe even more. Can you use your articles elsewhere? Yes, but not within six months of posting it. Until then, Suite101 owns it.
