You mean I have to work???

You are all hyped about getting your horse. You run around everywhere with a big grin on your face. You may look in your wallet and realize it is bare. You need money for yer horse! You look into your backyard, where you want to put your horse. Oh no! There is no fencing! Or you may be moving to an old abandoned house which is full of junk, and you just wanna go buy your horse. Think again, buddy.

If this sounds like you, you either need an attitude ajustment, or you need to get a cat. Horses are work, my friend. To give you a brief overveiw of what it takes to keep a healthy, clean, beautiful horse: you have daily all-over grooming, daily riding or other work, daily feeding and watering, daily stall-mucking, regular fence repair, constant fence upkeep, pasture care, etc. Then there is money! You have, at the beginning, your horse (quite a chunk out of the pocketbook, let me assure you), a good saddle (almost as bad as the horse), a bridle, halter, hoof pick, curry comb, sponges, stiff and soft bristled brushes, a place to put all that stuff, lots of fencing, etc. Then you have saddle cleaner, grain, hay, fly spray, vet care, farriers, and the list goes on and on. Then you have upkeep of whatever you choose for company for your horse. You have work to do!

Well, work! Get a job, and save like crazy. I (who am just a few months from getting my horse) have been saving nearly every cent for a year and a month, and I (somehow) saved more than I usually make in a year. I am still having to control my spending - so much so that I turned up a real bargain on something I have been looking for, for several months. Get out on the internet, or go to your library and find a good book on horse management. Then you are on your way.

As for moving into a fixer-upper, I am! All day for the past several days, I have been hauling trash, scrubbing bathrooms, pulling staples, and avoiding brown recluse spiders (very poisonous! One woman died because she disturbed one of their nests). All the while, I have been repeating to myself "Horse. Horse. It's for your horse." So get off the internet and go work like crazy until you can get your horse, and continue to do so to keep your horse happy.
