Vitamins Are Good For Our Complexion

Two vitamins in particular are good for our complexion. Shall we say our faces' best friends? Those two partners are vitamins A and D. Vitamin A helps keep the skin moist by preventing it from flaking, scaling and premature aging. Without enough vitamin A there is a pile up or clog of keratin and wastes which plug the pores and oil sacs to form blackheads and pimples. This affliction, acne, strikes, if at all, during adolescence when glands and hormones are struggling to bring the body in a balance. You can try ever astringent, mudpack, salve, ointment soap, or home remedy, but if you are lacking this vitamin, you will have acne.

Good or bad complexions are inherited, but even bad complexions can be helped. Have you ever stopped and thought about how acne sufferers usually get some relief in the summer? Wonder why? Mysteriously, when the orchards and gardens bestow their abundance, we eat more fruit and get more of the sun and it's vitamin D. Our skin becomes clearer and more vibrant. With winter, however, the agony returns, coupled with stress and menstrual cycles. However most dermatologists today will incorporate sunbaths and vitamin A; it is vitamin A's job to keep all tissues of the body healthy.

Why did mothers of the old days give their acne-plagued children cod liver oil? It is full of vitamins A and D. Vitamin A in capsules can be rubbed right onto blemishes for over night results for many.

Using vitamin A for acne isn't new. As far back as 1943, Dr. John J. Straumford of Astoria, Oregon, wrote in Northwest Medicine that he had used it successfully. Of 100 patients, 36 became entirely free of acne. He also noted that the skin will generally become worse at first, and a cure takes time sometimes as much as a year; although improvement was generally noticed within three months. There have been other studies since then, and the ultimate result became a vitamin A acid solution applied directly to the skin. A process only a dermatologist should perform.

We all know now that the best thing to do for acne is to stay away from things that will destroy the vitamin A in your body: sweets, Cokes, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, even prescription drugs. Eat plenty of the fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs and lean meats (especially liver) which contain not only vitamin A but vitamins B, C and E. Brewer's yeast is also a good source of the vitamin B your body needs to regulate its hormones, and to help blot up the extra oils your body is generating. Take vitamins A and D either in capsules or liquid form from fish liver oils. Take zinc and calcium, which are a must if the vitamin A is to work. It's also very important to get plenty of sun on your skin.
