The biggest, and most famous, produce market and beer garden that Munich has to offer, the Viktualienmarkt, will receive a new neighbor. On Monday, September 5th, the Schrannenhalle will officially open its doors to the public. Located right next to the Viktualienmarkt, it is bound to do a good share of business! The building itself is not new. As a matter of fact, it is replacing a predecessor by the same name which was constructed in 1853 from glass and steel, and was considered an architectural masterpiece of its time. Since the upkeep of the building was too much to handle, it soon fell into serious disrepair, and finally had to be torn down. However, the "feel" of the building, as well as its history, were never forgotten, and now the city of Munich will have its dream come true and see a modernized version of the building resurrected. Hailed as both a shopping center featuring local artisans, and an events venue, the new Schrannenhalle will offer food courts, sporting an impressive 900 seats, and small shops during regular working hours. Evenings and weekend the attraction will be the nightclubs and sports bars. To celebrate its official opening, the Schrannenhalle will become an official beer garden from September 17th to the 30th, and its doors will not close until 4:00 AM! As a matter of fact, the project's goal is to open a center that will never close, but offer different attractions year-round on a 24-7 basis! The builders and investors of this impressive project work hard to communicate their vision for this new venue; it is not your average shopping mall or beer garden; it is not a cookie-cutter one-size-fits-all event center; instead, it is to be on the forefront of trendsetting (Trendschöpfung), redefining the very quality (and happiness) of life (Lebensfreude). The head mayor (Oberbürgermeister) of Munich is hoping that this project will have a huge impact on the revitalization of downtown Munich. The owner of a local restaurant located at the Viktualienmarkt is guardedly optimistic: while he hopes that the new venue will bring more traffic to the location and also expand the customer base beyond the city's borders, he does wonder whether the ambitious plans to rely on artisans as a mercantile draw will work in reality. The speaker for the Viktualienmarkt retailers (Sprecherin der Marktkaufleute des Viktualienmarktes) is also optimistic. She does not see any competition problems arising, but instead is looking forward to the additional parking spots that will benefit the merchants for whom she speaks. An ambitious undertaking indeed.
