Time for another bunch of tips and hints for crafting. It's getting to be that time...yes, it is almost holiday season, and you'll be fine if you start getting ready now! In this week's General Creativity article, I've included a bunch of ideas that will hopefully inspire you and get you started preparing for the holidays and other celebrations along the way. I've thrown in clever ways to use old denim jeans, ways to use scraps of fabrics, and lots of other good stuff! Why wait? Dig in!
Use a lifesaver candy to hold candles on cakes. Cut the legs off old jeans and sweatpants into lengths, stuff and sew into small, durable travel pillows. Use old jeans to make a quilt and matching pillow. To make the quilt less bulky, surround each denim square with strips of bandana material. Cute! Use old jeans to make a cute shoulder bag. Run a bandana through the belt loops to make it cuter! The legs of old jeans or sweatpants can be used in making hair scrunchies. Using crafting foam, cute out a frame shape and decorate with various items (seeds, blocks, crafting foam shapes, etc. Glue small magnets on the back and insert your child's school picture. Mount it on the fridge! Spray colorful Fall leaves with hairspray and use them to jazz up a Fall centerpiece. The leaves last much longer when sprayed. Start saving mayonnaise jars. Fill them up with dry mixes and give in a nice gift basket. Make dry mixes such as brownies, cookies, and other family favorites. Don't forget to attach the recipe!!! Save more jars to hold tinted epsom salts. If desired, add a few drops of essential oils to the colored salts and shake well in zipper bag. Pour into jar, even layer colors if desired. Cap and decorate the top with fabric and lace or ribbon. Put the jar into a basket holding other bath items and accessories. Have the kids dip their hands into acrylic paint (mixed with a few drops of textile medium) and press them pointing downwards onto a colorful shirt or make a wallhanging. If the gift is for Grandma, add the words "Best Grandma, Hands Down." You get the idea. Pour some potpourri into the bottom of an old tea cup (buy cups at a tag sale!). Add a few drops of essential oil. Add fiberfill stuffing and glue fancy scraps of material over the stuffing. Makes an aromatic and original pincushion! Also use small tins or coffee mugs to do this.
