This is an article about a story I read in the anthology titled 100 Crooked Little Crime Stories selected by Robert H. Weinberg, Stefan Dziemianowicz, and Martin H. Greenberg. This is a fantastic book. If you are interested in Crime Fiction, you will enjoy reading this collection of short stories.
Crime Fiction stories have different subgenres such as detective fiction, serial killers, police procedurals, private investigators, legal stories, etc. This anthology contains different subgenres. The story that I read for this article is A Real Nice Guy by William F. Nolan. It is about a serial or sniper killer. Serial Killers are men or women who have killed more than once and usually killed people like nurses, certain types of women, children, etc. They might be caught or they might not be caught. In the following story, A Real Nice Guy by William F. Nolan, the sniper was not caught. The police had no idea who the killer was or what he looked like. A Real Nice Guy by William F. Nolan At first the identity of the sniper was unknown. People who witnessed the shootings didn't help the police either. Each witness gave a different description of the suspect. The police had no idea who they were dealing with or what he looked like. Then the author revealed his identity. The sniper's name was Jimmie Prescott. Throughout this story the author discussed the sniper and what he was like as a person. This was an unusual type of story the way it was written. I liked it because I felt like I knew who Jimmie was as a person. Jimmie used different disguises when he went out to kill somebody. That's why witnesses couldn't identify the killer, and why the police had trouble locating him. Jimmie also went to different cities or states to commit his crimes. He also knew the perfect escape routes after he committed the crimes. An interesting description the author used was his character. The author mentioned that Jimmie was a perfectionist. He was perfect. He didn't have a police record, his fingerprints weren't on file, and he had never been in prison. He was also rich as a result of an inheritance. After Jimmie committed a crime, he met a woman and took her out to eat at a fancy restaurant. Then he would go to a motel and have sex with her. He didn't go out with a woman more than once because he didn't want a relationship with a woman. He was independent and wanted to stay that way. He was satisfied with his way of life. Go To Page: 1 2
