KEEPING UP WITH THE GENEALOGICAL NEWS

The Internet is a haven for genealogists. New data sources are constantly being added, saving time and money for all those searching their family trees. There a number of ways to keep up with the latest online, as well as fill in the gaps of your genealogical education. Here are a some of my favorites.

First, there are Ezines, computer hybrids, also known as electronic magazines. The Journal of Online Genealogy focuses on online resources, and does a good job of keeping me updated on all the happenings at the major sites. Another Ezine is Family Tree Online. Although its emphasis is on Scottish heritage, it includes short, fun articles on more general topics. The list of genealogy Ezines is short, but I expect this media to grow. I will let you know about new ones.

Columns and newsletters are a quick way to pick up the latest news and find helpful hints. Ancestry.com Genealogy Columns has a variety of current and past columns to read. Then, down the center of Family TreeMaker's busy home page is a heading called Feature Columns that always has some interesting tidbit in it. Next, are the news and updates from the National Genealogical Society that provide the professional goings on in the world of genealogy.

My favorite way of getting news is through email. When I get busy and forget to check the other sites, these are thoughtfully delivered to my email box. I get a short dose of genealogy each morning from Everton's Family History Newsline. For a more indepth article, Treasure Map's Monthly Email Newsletter is well worth subscribing to. My last email is Cyndi's List Mailing List. This keeps me up on her ever expanding list of sites. All the above are free email services.

Hard copy, snail mail magazines can be subscribed to through the Internet. Heritage Quest, Ancestry, and Family Chronicle have sample articles you can read. Family TreeMaker Magazine offers a free subscription. Their back issues are filled with tons of articles on all topics, and are easily accessible.

One short cut I use for reading articles is to copy them on to my word processing program, than put them in a folder on my desktop. That way, I read them at my leisure. I can also make a hard copy later, if it is something I would like to add to my files.
