GENEALOGICAL HELP ON THE INTERNET

© Christine Sievers

When I dived into Internet genealogy, I was both new to genealogical research and the Internet. I spent hours wandering around, not knowing what I was doing. Since that time, I have found sites to help me out. This article will show you some of the places that give useful information, all of it free.

Root Diggin' Department For Newbies at http://www.janyce.com/gene/newbie.html is a great place for beginners. It not only gives some valuable tips on genealogy, but has helpful information about computer research. If you are confused about computer how-to's, head there.

Another informative site for beginners (good tips for the more experienced, also) is Heritage Quest's Beginners' Guide to Genealogy in Seven Basic Steps at http://www.heritagequest.com/genealogy/help/index.html. It is well organized and clear.

There are three sites that are brimming with information for everyone. Treasure Maps at http://www.firstct.com/fv/tmaps.html is an entire site designed for giving helpful information. It includes help on getting started on your research, a tutorial on FHL (the LDS Family History Library), a wonderful lesson on deciphering old handwriting, help on using the US Census, and more.

Family Treemaker at http://www.familytreemaker.com/ provides ongoing classes. Right now, they have available classes on Beginning Genealogy, Tracing Immigrant Origins, and Beginning Internet Genealogy. They also have a list of how-to articles from back issues of their magazine. Scroll down to the How-to Info on their menu. This is a goldmine of information.

Finally, take a look at Ancestry.com Lessons at http://ancestry.com/lessons/academy.htm. It includes a page full of how-to's, both specific (including computer help) and general. You might just find the answer to your question at this site.

Next week, I will give the locations of places you can find all those family tree forms that will help you keep your records straight. This is one time that you need a printer. You can copy these forms for free.

Until next week, happy ancestor hunting.
