Beginning Research in Micronesia

© Christine Sievers

In the next weeks, I will be paddling around the Pacific islands. This week, I have come upon the Federated States of Micronesia, Palua, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The sites listed below should get you started when you are ready to learn about your ancestors from those islands. I have looked over an enormous number of links, and pulled from them those that will be the most helpful as you venture into a new area- the home countries of your forbears.

As always, I remind you to gather the stories of your older living relatives. Family stories will often contain myth, but that is where you will find the clues for your research. More importantly, those stories will breathe life into what might have been just a dry list of names. A good taperecorder is always helpful for this project.

I have provided two categories of links. One will give you background information, and the other is more specific to genealogy. Before looking for specific information about your ancestors from another country, understanding the background of that country is important. Otherwise you can get lost in your research.

Federated States of Micronesia

General:

At the Welcome to the Federated States of Micronesia Homepage you will find a wealth of background and contact information. Some of those most helpful links are history, a map, culture, and individual state links. The government links will provide the very important contact information you need to write for documentation.

Genealogical:

MicronesiaGenWeb: The Federated States of Micronesia is a site to keep your eye on for further links. It now has a link to Surnames & Queries, Lookups, a Map, and Mailing list. Then, Helm's Genealogical Toolbox - Federated States of Micronesia can provide you with additional links tailored to your search.

Republic of Palau

General:

The Lonely Planet World Guide - Destination Palau provides excellent links to history and culture. I have often turned to their excellent short articles to learn about far away places. It will help you understand the lives of your ancestors.

Genealogical:

PalauGenWeb does not yet have a host, but it does have several links, including surnames and queries. You may want to volunteer to host it. Then, Helm's Genealogy Toolbox - Palau, Republic of provides further links that you can explore. As each family history is different, one of these links may be what you need to open a brick wall.

Northern Mariana Islands

General:

The History of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is a history divided into periods, with a detailed account of World War II. It provides a neat and compact history. You will find that the World War II links are an important part of your research in this area.
