This week I travel into a world of islands- Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. These islands are rich in history and customs. As you 'jump the pond', you will find a fascinating journey. It will become the journey of your ancestors from a land of their birth to a new and, often times, confusing culture. You will gain a deep appreciation of their world.
First, gather as many stories as you can that have been passed down in your family. To enrich your understanding of their stories, studying the history and recorded culture of the area is invaluable. INDONESIA Indonesia is a country of islands. Five main islands (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya), two major archipelagos (Nusa Tenggara and the Maluku Islands), and sixty smaller islands. Two large islands are shared. Kalimantan is on Borneo, shared with Malaysia and Brunei. Irian Jaya is on New Guinea, shared with Papua New Guinea. When you begin to search the Internet for more information, a good place to start is to get an understanding of Indonesia's history. The History of Indonesia traces the history from before it was Indonesia to the present. The Perry-Castaneda Map Collection-Indonesia Maps will give you a visual perspective. Then, to connect to others searching their familes from Indonesia join the Indonesia Genealogy Forum and the Indonesia Mailing Lists. Then, theSurname Helper Indonesia will aid you in searching specific surnames. For a wealth of further linksHelm's Genealogy Toolbox-Indonesia will start you well on your way. PAPUA NEW GUINEA This is another country of islands. The main island, New Guinea is shared with Indonesia. The smaller island groups include the Bismarck Archipelago, New Britain, New Ireland and the North Solomons. The Lonely Planet World Guide gives a good introduction into the history and the culture of Papua New Guinea. The Papua New Guinea GenWeb Index provides the links to get started on your genealogical search. Then, the Papua New Guinea Mailing Lists will help you connect with others doing research in your area. Happy Hunting! Go To Page: 1
