Beginning Researh in Japan, Korea, and the Phillipines

My world tour continues this week, and I again remind all researchers to use all available resources at home first. Gather as much information as you can from your older relatives, their stories will be invaluable not only for your search, but also for the color they will add to your family history.

Your ancestors lives can be put in perspective when you understand the history they were living through. That it is why it is wise to begin your overseas research by increasing your understanding of their history.

Some of your older relatives may have photographs and artifacts that they might want to share with you. Ask if you can make copies of the photographs. Bring along a camera when you interview them, to take their picture and a picture of the artifacts they share. A family history is much more than just a list of names and dates.

JAPAN

There are some comprehensive starting points for your research in Japan, making your internet research profitable. Studying the history and culture before interviewing your relatives is very helpful.

I found an excellent site, by Stuart Terashita. It will give you all the information you need to get you started on your Japanese ancestral search. The best place to start is on his Koseki History Page. Then, return to his mainKoseki Page for the information you need to search for your Koseki. Other helpful links can be found on his Home Page.

Need more information on Koseki? Check out Debbie McMillan-Ito's Tips for Obtaining a Copy of Your Japanese Family Registry. It is a neatly put together, question and answer site, packed with information.

The Japan GenWeb will provide further links to round out your search.

Korea is rich in culture. You can begin to understand the home of your ancestors by reading The Korean Culture Pages, a wonderful collection of short essays.

The History of Korea and Perry-Castaneda Map Collection-Korea Maps will add to your understanding of your ancestral home.

General SouthKorea Query Forum Message Index and Korea Mailing List are ways to connect with others doing research of their Korean ancestors.
