History of African Countries

The following links are good starting points for studying the history of your African ancestors as a genealogist. Again, I have left some countries of the African continent out as they are more applicable to the cultures of the mid-East, although many countries are a crossroad of cultures. The distinctively Arab countries will be included in my next week's article.

I highly recommend to anyone whose ancestors came from Africa to read Issues in African History by Professor James Giblin, before you go on to the study your individual country.

WEST AFRICA

BENIN: Benin - Kingdom People - This site is a thumbnail history, but it has excellent links within it. In particular, visit the link to the essay on African States.

BURKINA FASO: Burkina-Main - Provides general information, plus history and links.

COTE D' IVOIRE: West African Gallery: History of Ivory Coast (Cote d' Ivoire) - Contains links for further information.

the GAMBIA: The Gambia and Relative Websites - Terrific site with links.

GHANA: Civilizations in Africa: Ghana - Excellent brief history, and an interisting drop down menu at the end which will link you to other information.

GUINEA-CONAKRY: Guinea-Conakry Information - A fact sheet with a short history and some links.

GUINEA BISSAU: Guinea-Bissau-Print View--Encarta - This is a short history.

LIBERIA: Liberia-Print View--Encarta, a short history, and DPLS Archive: Liberia Roll of Emigrants, 1820-1843 and Census 1843, a genealogical source site.

MALI: History of Mali - Although it is set up as an elementery school study guide, it provides great historical information, and further links with a wealth of information.

NIGER: Niger (country)-Print View--Encarta - A short history with explanatory links. And the history of two cultures in Niger THe Tahoua Tuareg of Niger and the Hausa.

NIGERIA: Nigeria History - Comprehension linked history.

SENEGAL: New African Yearbook: Senegal - A comprehensive history.

SIERRA LEONE: Cry Freetown-History of Sierra Leone before 1990 - Brief history with links for more information.

TOGO: HIstory of Togo - A brief and interesting history.

GENERAL WEST AFRICA: Baxter's EduNET-Time Machine - Fascinating site of ancient history.

EAST AFRICA

ETHIOPIA: Ethiopia History - A comprehensive linked history. Ethiopa is a country with cultural crossroads.

KENYA: Tim and Lara Beth's Kenya Page-History - Excellent and comprehensive site. Links at the bottom of the page contain more information. The 'People' link will take you to a site that profiles certain tribes.
