Beginning Research in Eastrern Europe 2 (Hungary to the Ukraine)

This list of East European countries taxed all my searching efforts. Some of the following countries had very little genealogical information on the Internet. However, as more people add their web pages information will increase. For now, mailing lists and bulletin boards will be your best source of information.

As I ventured into some of these countries, I realized that another article will be necessary for East Europe (and Central Europe). Some of your ancestors will have come from countries no longer in existence, and distinct ethnic groups within countries.

With this in mind, here are the remaining East European countries now in existence, and good sites to start your search:

HUNGARY: Family History in Hungary

Mailing Lists: Hungary Mail Lists

History: Hungarian History

MACEDONIA: MacedoniaGenWeb- this is still in the draft stage. I found very little internet genealogical information on Macedonia. The Macedonian mailing list would be the best way to find and share information.

Mailing Lists: Macedonian Republic Mailing Lists

History: Pan-Macedonian Network-Historical Review of Macedonia

MOLDOVA: MoldovaGenWeb - there are very few genealogical sites specific to Moldova, best way to connect with others doing research is through the GenConnect query board

no mailing lists

History: Moldova-A Bit of History

MONTENEGRO: Montenegro GenWeb- again, this is another country with little on the web for genealogy, your best start would be to use the link to the GenConnect query board

Mailing ListMontenegro Mailing List- actually an Albanian mailing list that includes other areas as Montenegro

History: Montenegro at a Glance (a Sovereign and Independent State)

ROMANIA: Romania Town Location Guide- this is a good place to start, because further research will involve knowing what district your ancestors town is in, and possibly, what that town is now called. When you have that information you can go to the Romania World GenWeb and find the district. Most districts are not yet adopted, but all have message boards.

Romania Mailing Lists- these include the Banat and Bukovina, and Slavic regions

History: Concise History of the Romanian People

RUSSIA: Researching Russian Roots: How-To

Mailing lists: Russia Mailing Lists

History: Russian History

SERBIA: Serbia GenWeb- still in draft stage, very little genealogy information on the web, best way to connect with others is through the GenConnect query board

no mailing lists

History: Serbia: an Encarta Encyclopedia Article

SLOVENIA: Slovene Genealogy Caveat For Researchers

Mailing Lists: Slovenia Mailing Lists

History: History-Slovenia

UKRAINE: "Did Your Baba Come from Austria?" by Orysia Tracz - really! It is about Ukrainian ancestors.
