Many of us have old pictures laying around without dates. Costume History will help you date the picture by studying the clothes that they are wearing.
Most of the links you will be interested in as a genealogist will be the 19th and 20th century. However it's such a fun site that you might stay awhile to view all the clothing from ancient Babylonian time to the present. As you scroll down the page you will find links sorted by century. For instance, I went to the 20th century and started with the Turn of the Century class lecture (They have an online class you can take. But, you can view the lectures without being enrolled.) It contained interesting information with links and lots of pictures. You can click on a picture to get an enlarged view. Next, I explored the Edwardian links page and found numerous links to pictures of clothing. There is even a link to the PBS series, The 1900 House. And, of course, there is a link to the Sears catalogue. From that link you can get a mini-history of popular American culture at the turn of the century. Clothing is much more than fashion. It is a commentary on the culture that our ancestors lived in. Through studying their clothing, I came to understand a little bit more about their lives. Clothing is a bit of history that is often overlooked. I found it to be much more revealing than the political events of the day, as it tells a story of their day to day existence. I hope you will enjoy these pages as much as I did. Go To Page: 1
