A discussion of libraries would not be complete without mentioning the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Their genealogy department contains more than 250,000 items on microfilm and microfiche.
They are the creators of PERSI. For more information on PERSI see my past article, PERSI-the PERiodical Source Index. Allen County Public Library houses the worlds largest, English language collection of history and genealogy periodicals. Once you have information on an article you need, you can search PERSI. For a fee, copies of articles can be obtained. Libraries can become an excellent extension to our genealogy research. For more information on libraries Chris and Thomas Tinney Sr. have provided and excellent page of links for Libraries and Museums. Finally, some of the best information we can get for our personal genealogy will be found at the small local public libraries and historical societies in the towns and cities where our ancestors lived. There you will find local histories, city directories, old town maps and local newspapers. So, if you are planning a trip to an ancestral hometown, stop by The USGenWeb Project-Link to States, find your state and county, and search for the local libraries. NEXT WEEK: A look at Family History Centers. Go To Page: 1
