BUILDING A GENEALOGY LIBRARY

My kids gave me a gift certificate at Amazon.com for Mother's Day. Immediately, I thought 'genealogy books'. The hard part is narrowing it down to the book I really want. So, I took a look around the genealogy internet to see what the experts were saying.

I thought you might like to see some of the review sites I found. The Internet provides a lot of help and information, but there is nothing like a good genealogy book to curl up with at night. Seriously, there are some very good books out there to hone your research skills.

Here is some sugestions from expert genealogists:

Genealogy Bulletin-"Which Guidebook is Best?" by William Dollarhide - A good guidebook to find records should be part of every genealogist's library. This is a review of the top three.

Genealogy.com: "Top 10 Genealogy Books" by Ron Wild - After polling experts in genealogy books around the country, Ron came up with this list of the 10 most selected books.

Mark & Cyndi's Genealogy Library - Most of you are familiar with Cyndi's List. Here are the books in her library. A good list, with links. She has included an extensive list of British research books

Genealogy.com: "Building a Dream Library" by Myra Vanderpool Gormley - Myra realizes that as we progress in our research, our focus changes. She has put the books in categories to reflect this reality.

Ancestry.com- "Favorite Genealogy Books" by George G. Morgan - I have always enjoyed his articles for their practical advice. In this article, he provides a very solid list of his 10 personal favorite genealogy books.

Genealogy Bulletin- "Building a Genealogy Library" by William Dollarhide - With the premise of outfitting a small library with genealogy books for under $700, these are the 20 books he recommends.

"What's NEW in Genealogy...Today! The Bookshelf" - Genealogy Today has put together a good site for browsing. For those hard to find genealogy books, they have links to sellers of genealogy books.

Distant Cousins- "Book of the Month" - This site provides an indepth book review each month.

Helm's Genealogy Toolbox - "Genealogy Bookstore Toolbox" - Another great browsing site.

And last,

Ancestry.com- "Using Common Books for Research" by George G. Morgan - Not all of the books important for genealogy research are genealogy books per se. Don't forget to include these in your library.

Have fun browsing in the cyber library!
