SurnameWeb - The Genealogy Web Portal is all about surnames. I took some time wandering around, and found that there is a lot at this site.
How do you find out if one of your surnames has an SRC? Go to the search ingine at http://www.surnameweb.org/search/Search.... Search for one of your surnames. Under the search engine, it will bring up the surname underlined. Click on it, and it will take you to a page that will provide links and let you know if there is an SRC for that surname. Many surnames are still waiting for a host. Instead, or in addition to, a WebRing you may consider hosting one of the Surname Resource Centers. You can find the information on how to do this at http://www.surnameweb.org/host/. If you are not ready to do that, you can still add your information to the SurnameWeb. If you have a webpage, you can add it to the database at the SurnameWeb Submission Page: Add a New Record, where you can include your major surnames. If that surname has an SRC, you can add your information by going to that site. I love this idea, and am looking forward to watching this site grow. The SurnameWeb - The Genealogy Web Portal page has other useful links- from their CyberRoots newsletter to their PAF users guide. Before you leave the site, take at look at their Surname Web - Search Page. Definitely, a site to bookmark. It provides a multitude of engines to use when searching your surnames. NEXT WEEK: The Internet provides a lot of information for genealogists, but you still need to send for documentation. In next week's article, I will highlight some good starting points to help you find out just where you need to send your requests.
