KEEPING UP WITH GENEALOGY ON THE INTERNET: SURNAME SEARCHES

14. Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: another large database that is important to check; a large part of their data is on their CD's; you can get free lookups at the following two sites: Genealogy WFT List and Ancestral Findings Free Genealogy Lookups

These are, by far, not all the surname search engines available. But, for my quarterly update, I need to keep it to something I can manage in a week. Between times, I take quick peaks at other, smaller search engines. For some of these other links, see my previous article on posting you surname at http://suite101.com/article.cfm/genealog... It is always good to back and check occasionally at the sites where you have posted your surname.

There are two sites that have numerous search engines, Steve Lacy's Genealogy Gateway and the 11 pages of search engines at GenSearcher - All-in-One Genealogy search Page. These sites I also use at other times. Because of the number of search engines they have available, you could probably spend a week at each of these sites. But, they are important to check in on.

Remember, if you do find records on the Internet, you still need to send for the copies of the originals.

NEXT WEEK: Checking in on other important resources.
