SEARCHING ACROSS OCEANS: PART 2Genealogy and history are a natural combination. Our ancestors did not live in a vacuum. The historical events surrounding their lives greatly effected them, and may lead to the key of why they immigrated. Many personal stories have been lost through the generations, but learning about the events that surrounded their lives on a broader scale will help us to understand them a little better. Where to start? I found myself in a maze of web sites trying to find the most direct route to the history of my ancestors. The following is a list of what I felt gave me the easiest route to what I was looking for. I hope they will help you in your search for history. Good places to start: HyperHistory - a world view perspective, gives a good general view of world events Peaks/waves of immigration - a general, historical outline of immigration trends in the United States Gaining more knowledge: History Channel - use their search engine to enter in a country or historical event to find their articles Zeroing in: WorldGenWeb - our old friend, many of the volunteers have gathered historical sites pertaining to their country, look for the English version to click on if they are written in the country's language Cyndi's List - from the main menu find the country you are researching, many historical information sites are listed Big sites for in depth research: Horus' History Links - thousands of cataloged history links The WWW-VL History Index - another mega link history site Finally, don't forget to look into the mail lists at User Mailing Lists Hosted by RootsWeb. Happy searching! NEXT WEEK: Overcoming the language barrier
