FARAWAY COUSINS

This week was an exciting one for me, genealogically speaking. I was contacted by my first overseas cousin. Having often fantasized about that far away place in time and space, it was with amazement that I read an email from a cousin who shares a common great-great-great grandfather with me. It made me realize that as curious as I have been about possible cousins who were still living in my ancestor's country of origin, the same curiosity is shared by the descendants of our common ancestors who remained in that country.

My cousin in the Netherlands found me because I have a very simple web page on the Internet. If you haven't created you own page yet, Cyndi's Home Page Construction Kit has all the information you need, including places to find free web pages.

To help you in your search for cousins far away, and information about those lands that your ancestors immigrated from, start at The WordlGenWeb. The complete list of countries represented is found at The WorldGenWeb Project Country Index.

The countries are divided into world areas. When you click on a country from their index, it will take you to a list of countries in that area and their status. Not all of the countries have a host, but they do have a message board and another source for finding information about the country.

The Internet is making armchair world travel a fascinating branch of endeavor for genealogists.

Happy Hunting!
