WHERE DO I START?

Genealogy is becoming a popular hobby with many new people entering into the fun. I have been asked, "Where do I start?" To answer this question, this article lists some good places to learn about beginning genealogy. But, not for beginners only! A good review of the basic skills keeps the more experienced on track, too.

GENEALOGY LESSONS

RootsWeb Guide to Tracing Family Trees - Super site that provides great links with each lesson. I recommend it for beginners as well as experienced genealogists. It is my favorite beginner's site, as well as a site to sharpen my skills.

Beginner's Guide to Family History Research is a book online by Desmond Walls Allen and Carolyn Earle Billingsley thatprovides all the information a beginner needs to get started, and good review advice for the more experienced.

Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site: Online Genealogy Classes provides simple instructions for Beginning Genealogy, Tracing Immigrant Origins and Internet Genealogy. There is a small amount of information on each page. You might find this tedious or it might be just your cup of tea.

Discovering Your Heritage - From Genealogy Lessons at Ancestry.com - Less directed for a beginner, but has numerous articles on different topics.

QUICK START PAGES (great one-pagers for the impatient)

Virtual Texan - Tracing Our Roots -Brenda Kellow

A Genealogy Primer by Maureen Reed

26 Genealogy Tips to Get You Started by Robert Bickham.

MAIL LISTS FOR BEGINNERS

GEN-NEWBIE LIST - No question is too elementary for this list. There are many experienced genealogists and computer people to help you with any question you might have. Not only for beginners. Be prepared for a lot of posts. I used the digest form.

Lost_Newbies - haven't tried this list myself, but it looks promising.
