When I first started in computer genealogy, I ran across gedcoms. What they where, I had no clue. For those of you new to this area of genealogy, I have listed a couple of good sites to give you a background. And, for those of you who are familiar with this type of genealogy file I have included some interesting extensions and new developments.

WHAT IS A GEDCOM?

Gedcom by Dick Eastman, is a good overall view, and includes help on how to use them.

Gedcom 101 by Jan McClintock is another information site and includes examples.

MORE INFORMATION:

Once you know what a gedcom is Gedcom Usage Guide by Dr. Graham J Williams will be helpful in giving you information about different types of gedcom records.

GEDCOM ENHANCEMENTS:

Gedecom 5.5 is out. The GEDCOM Standard Release 5.5: Table of Contents provides all the information and more that you need to know.

Randy Winch gives a selection of enhancements for your gedcom at GEDCOM Utilities

Gedcom to HTML Genealogy Webpage Builder by Rob Jacob is a shareware program that gives you the tools to make a webpage from your gedcom file. It comes in Mac and PC.

Gedcom Viewer, free download by Sandy and Brian Kinghorn adds navigation enhancements to your gedcom.

John Smith's Home Page gives you some of his programs.

INTERACTIVE GEDCOM SITES:

Dave Wilks' free gedcom server is a place to share gedcoms.

GenServ is a huge gedcom data base. There is a small membership fee.

You could start by asking other computer/genealogy contact which Family History program they recommend. Or go to a good search engine (such as http://www.askjeeves.com) and type in what you want then ...

There is much information about how to use and
adapt Gedcom files on the internet. I am probably
missing something obvious but where to I either
purchase or download the actual program in order ...
