A LOOK AT GENDEXThis week we will take a look at Gendex by Gene Stark. As I noted it is elegantly simple. Before we look at his surname list, let's take a look at what else he has to offer. If you want to convert your gedcom files to a form suitable for the WWW, he has made a shareware program ($20) called GED2HTML:A GEDCOM to HTML Translator. On that page he includes a lot of information to help you use it. If you are still wondering about what this GEDCOM stuff is all about, his link to the LDS information The GEDCOM Standard 5.5 Release:Table of Contents will help you get an understanding of it. His link to Randy Wilson's site Ged2Ped Utility provides a way to "create ancestor overview pedigree charts of someone in a GEDCOM file". It is freeware, and may be the way you would spruce up your GEDCOM information. Finally, for the fun. You can search his GENDEX--WWW Genealogical Index of over 8 million names. You can contact those with a surname that look like a match. And, submit your own data if you have it on a website, and it is GEDCOM ready. What I like about his site is the simplicity and the speed. A great break from those advertizing laden and slow moving sites. HAPPY HUNTING!
