THE US CENSUS PART IV: VARIABLES

© Christine Sievers

What you can find on a census schedule varies by year. For a thumbnail sketch of each year see GRS-Library-What's On Each Census. For more detail on what is on each census see The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy page 109 which provides a general overview of the census schedule availability, and page 110 which begins a detailed description of each census year, starting with 1790.

Soundex cards, also, vary. The 1880 Soundex Card, the 1900 Soundex Card, and the 1910 Miracode (Soundex) from the Genealogy Record Service-Our Library will show you what they look like. Then, you can find a blank soundex card to print and take with you when you do research atSoundex Card.

Abbreviations are used. GRS-Our Library-Census and Soundex Abbreviations will help you figure them out.

Census records are at times confusing, but Treasure Maps' The U.S. Federal Census provides a very concise turorial. Be sure to read the "glitches" article. Ancestry.com-Tips on Using Census Records, also offers some good advice.
