US CENSUS PART III: THE CENSUS AND THE FAMILY HISTORY CENTERS

The LDS Family History Centers have census indexes available to use at their sites. Family History Information/Where is the Nearest Family History Center provides a list of locations, so you can find the one closest to you.

But, the Internet can save you time before you go, by providing you with a way to search the indexes online. Last week, we took a look at the the Soundex Index at the Nara.

There is an additional index that is at the FHCenters, the AIS (Accelerated Indexing System). Dear Myrtle's AIS Census Indexes gives a good look at this system. Ancestry.com does provide access to the AIS to members. Whether a subscription would be worth it, depends on your available time to spend at the FHCenters versus your time for the Internet and the numbers of ancestors you need to look for in the AIS.

Once you have the information as to where in the volumnous census records the schdule you need is, you can find out if that microfilm is available at your FHCenter. If not, they can order it for you.

Remember, our goal is to get to the primary source. The indexes are our guide to finding the copies of original census schedules for our ancestors.
