Hopefully, your talks with relatives have given you a list of cousins, and some clues as to where they might be living. Now is the time to search for their missing addresses.

The Internet has some useful, free resources to help you find these addresses. My favorite is Switchboard.com. It is easy to use. The best way to go is to click on People Search, enter the name; then the city and state (if you know them). It will bring up a list of matches with addresses, and the option next to the name to click on an e-mail search. A really fascinating feature are the links to maps, post offices, and websites about the area. Very useful! I had great fun with the maps.

Another excellent people search is 555-1212.com. Click on the residential search, enter the name of the person you are searching, and the location. This site includes searches for countries outside of the United States.

If you need more resources, Finding People on the Internet provides a neat list of possible resources.

While I'm the subject of addresses, a handy site to bookmark is National Address and ZIP+4 Browser. It will give you the correct zip code for an address.

Finally, your search may lead you to some specialized areas. Cyndi's List - Finding People provides a multitude of resources.

Although your search may bring up phone numbers, many people find a phone call intrusive. If they don't know who you are, they may be skeptical. While a personal, handwritten letter is a more unique attention getter in this day and age of beepers and cell phones.

Happy Hunting!

HOT TIP OF THE WEEK - a great aid for your library research, National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections, describing the holdings of multiple libraries, archives, and similar repositories. Now that it is online you can search your ancestors' surnames, hometowns, and the institutions they are connected to.
