You Can't Get to Heaven on Roller Skates or What I learned This SummerUnfortunately, I didn’t have a clean landing. My left foot went one way and the rest of me went another. I heard a pop on the way down and knew I had done something bad before I even hit the floor. Before I knew it, someone from the skating rink was offering to help me get up and ended up carrying me off the floor. Whatever cockiness was left completely melted when I realized that I couldn’t get up by myself. Two doctor’s visits later, I am limited to walking around on crutches, and I feel some sort of kindred affiliation to other mobility-challenged folks. I have to ask people for help doing almost everything from tying my shoes to getting glasses off the shelf, to carrying the laundry upstairs. It’s hard to miss the irony that by giving in to my daredevil’s desire to show off, I managed to humble myself. This is not the first opportunity I have had to learn this lesson. Hopefully, the consequence of long-term immobility will serve as a reminder not to get cocky in the future.
