Last month you read about a man who simply ignored his attraction to other men. Here is the story of a woman who never knew she was gay! While this might be hard to believe there are those whose true sexuality does not make it’s self-known with out a push from someone else.
Cindy always thought she would be a nun. Coming from a second generation Polish-American family in the 40’s she was raised to be a nun just as her one brother was raised to be a priest. It was very common in the past for strongly Catholic families to encourage a child to enter religious service. Cindy had entered the convent at the age of 15 and was kept very innocent until then. The convent was a refuge for her. Her father was a mean alcoholic who would terrorize the family. She strongly felt a vocation from God and did everything she could to be a good nun. However, it was clear to the convent leadership that she just wasn’t nun material and they asked her to leave after 3 years. In her ethnic family, her being rejected from the convent was a huge scandal. They gave her two options. Either get a job and get married as soon as possible or join the military. She was not even given one day to rest at home, so great was the pressure. So she went job-hunting when she came home and found a job immediately. The marriage was a bit more difficult. Men really didn’t interest her but she kept trying to find one that did. When she met her husband to be she knew she would and could marry him happily. She was a good wife and the mother bearing three sons. She never suspected she was a lesbian. She was never told anything bout sex by her parents and was totally innocent. She had been attracted to other women, but never knew what the feelings were. She simply interpreted them as super strong friendship feelings. Cindy and her husband grew apart through the years as the communication between them died. After 20 years they decided to divorce. They had tried counseling and the counselor’s recommendation was that the consider ending the marriage. It was a traumatic divorce. But to Cindy it was very freeing. She knew she had done everything she could to make it work. She had grown strong enough to withstand her families objections and go her own way, however she was still totally naive about hr sexuality. Go To Page: 1 2
