Beauty Bush- In the height of its bloom, this plant is guaranteed to be the most beautiful bush in your yard. A massive cloud of soft pink, tubular blooms cover the arching branches. In winter, a light snow fall will enhance the twisted and curved nature of the woody branches. In early summer, this bush creates a long and reliable flower show. It is a survivor in the most neglected areas, but with some attention will be even more lush and glorious. The oval leaves are tinged with amber and crimson in late autumn, continuing to draw attention to this large, undemanding shrub. Full sun to part shade, likes sandy soil but will grow anywhere. Little to no pruning required (Kolkwitzia amabilis) - 8ft h x 5 ft w - zone 2.
PeeGee Hydrangea- In late summer and autumn, when few other shrubs produce blooms the PeeGee Hydrangea comes into its own displaying it rich ivory conical flowers. Seen glowing in the moonlight they seem almost from another world. Several dainty, ivory petals make up one flower, up to 1 1/2 ft long and 1 ft wide. As the weather cools, the 'chameleon like' blooms are tinted a rich coppery-rose. Leaving the dried flower heads during winter makes a lovely display as the snow cloaks each papery petal. A specimen plant that can stand alone or create a pleasing tapestry intermingled with evergreens or deciduous shrubs. Light pruning in early spring. Partial shade to sun, rich, moist soil (Paniculata or Grandiflora) - 6ft h x 5 ft w - zone 3.
