Guardian Angels

When I was knee-high to a grasshopper Mother told me we all have guardian angels that watch out for us, and they do so even on into adulthood. There may be some truth to this. For example, one day this past winter I was working under my truck. I had raised it using a hydraulic jack and taken both front wheels off to do some patching-up work on each fender well. Rust had taken its toll and in order to pass Pennsylvania's tough vehicle inspection program, I needed to put new metal in place. I'm no mechanic but I do enjoy getting my hands greasy every now and then on a minor fix-up such as this one. It's a male thing I reckon.

And so on a cold snowy winter weekend, when gardening is still but a future dream, I decided I had better get the patch-work done. There I was, sprawled on the garage floor with my tools and bluegrass music playing on the stereo, ready to get my manly dose of vehicle grease and grime. But it always happens that whenever I start a job that I think is a simple one, difficulties arise. The first problem wasn't all that bad; the light bulb in my shop light had burned out, easy fix. The second problem, although not very difficult to solve, required more nerve; the space between the fender well and hub wasn't quite large enough for me to squeeze into. Solution: raise vehicle higher using jack, problem solved, or so I thought.

PLEASE! If you ever use a hydraulic jack to lift your vehicle and have to crawl under it to do anything, for safety's sake place jack stands underneath it before you proceed to go under there! Luckily, and I must give full credit to my guardian angel, I wasn't hurt when I accidentally kicked the jack causing it to become dislodged from my truck while I was under it, which in turn caused the truck to come crashing down on my guardian angel instead of me! Somehow I managed to roll out from under it just in time!

I've decided to make a special piece of garden art and dedicate it to my guardian angel. A "gourdian" angel, made from a dried gourd a good friend and fellow gardener gave me recently at a plant swap, will be hung in my garden in honor of my personal guardian angel. I have already started this fun project and will provide you with all the details on how you can make your own "gourdian" angel upon my return from another plant swap and gardeners camping trip I'm attending this weekend in Hagerstown, Maryland.
