Bedding Plant Time

This time of year always fill me with excitement as I prepare for the summer flowering plants. As usual a large selection of new plants are on offer, and as I have no will power when it comes to plant, every new variety must be tried. The post van has called almost every other day for the last few weeks delivering the little boxes of precious plants. There is still great excitement as the boxes are opened and a quick dash to the potting shed to sort pots, check on stocks of potting compost, and to carefully write labels. Great care is taken at this stage and a label is placed in each pot, as I have been known in the past to get new plants and plants that I am not familiar with mixed up.

The little plastic packs that plug plants are dispatched in are very good for keeping the plants from getting mixed, as the name is behind each plant printed on a sheet of paper. So it is a simple matter of potting one plant and then copying the name onto a label and placing it in the pot.

When the potting is finished all the plants are placed in the greenhouse to recover from their ordeal of the few days in the post. They are kept shaded from the sun at this stage just in case they would get scorched after their period in the dark. After two of three days in the fresh compost they have completely recovered from their ordeal.

Plants that have arrived this year to date include Nemesia 'Innocence', a beautiful pure white with a yellow throat. I hope this one is as good as 'Confetti'! To add to my list ofDiascias which includes 'Salmon Supreme','Lilac Belle',, and 'Ruby Field', comes 'Apple Blossom', pale apricot pink with a white centre, 'Blue Bonnet', pink suffused blue, 'Ice Cracker',, pure white,' Little Charmer', dark pink., 'Red Start', deep pink, and 'Sydney Olympics', mid apricot.

Violas have long been a favorite of mine, as they seem to fit in anywhere. Not as vulgar as the pansy they last much longer without attention and produce more flowers over a given period. You have probably guessed Violas are next on the list.

This collection included 'Columbine', mauve streaked cream. 'Etain', the late Geoff Hamilton's favorite, yellow edged with purple, 'Jeannie Bellew', pale primrose yellow, 'Maggie Mott', lilac blue with yellow eye. I already have stock of the next two but as they were part of a collection I had to take them anyway.' Molly Sanderson', black with purple veining, and 'Rebecca', creamy white streaked mauve. As these two do so well I will always find a place for them even if something else has to go.
