You might also want to feed your tomato plants with some ground-up Tums every few weeks to prevent blossom end rot. Tomatoes sometimes suffer from calcium deficiencies, and need the extra boost that Tums can supply.

Getting Ready to Harvest

For the sweetest, richest flavour, let your tomatoes develop their full colour on the plant before you pick them. Vine-ripening is definitely the best.

Depending on where you live, you might want to stop your tomatoes' growth in late summer by removing the growing tip, leaving one leaf above the late formed trusses. Stopping ensures that all the fruit will develop fully before the onset of colder weather.
