The Fall Flower Garden

Cimicifuga is also a good choice for the semi-shaded border. There are several varieties that bloom earlier in the season, so take that into consideration when choosing varieties or cultivars. One for the late summer to early fall border would be 'Atropurpurea', which has a purple to reddish cast to the leaves. It is not only lovely in bloom, but the foliage adds a nice accent to the shady border.

Perovskia, or Russian Sage, offers airy blooms of icy blue and periwinkle tones to the sunny border. Russian Sage blooms from late summer into fall and enjoys dry and sunny conditions.

Tricyrtis, or the Toad Lily, is another choice for the moist and shady border. Many cultivars have patterned leaves or flowers, and they partner well with some of the smaller varieties of hostas.

Boltonia forms mounds of small, asterlike flowers. Many gardeners are not familiar with this plant, but it does well in our region and is tolerant of various soil conditions. It does grow to its fullest advantage in full sun and moisture retentive soils. Boltonia will tolerate drier conditions, but height will be affected.

Sneezeweed, also known as Helen's Flower and officially as Helenium autumnale, can bloom into October in our region. Colors range from purest yellows to golds and reds, to mahogony and russets. Originally found in wetlands, give these flowers moist soil and full sun.

Briefly, other plants to consider are: Physostegia virginiana: Obedient Plant, Heliopsis helianthoides: 'Summer Sun' Oxeye Daisy, Dendranthema: 'Clara Curtis Daisy', and Chelone, also known as Turtleheads.

There is also an article I have written which focuses on fall blooming crocus: Fall Blooming Crocus.

There are many plants to choose for late summer to early fall interest. Try to perk up the appearance of your late season border by choosing a few familiar and new late season bloomers for years to come!
