2002 is here, and so are many new and exciting plants! Some of the most intriguing introductions are, as always, All-America Selections. These plants have been extensively tested and have proven to be durable and productive in a variety of climates throughout the United States. They should be good performers for those of us who garden in the Great Lakes region.

This month's article is about the winners in ornamental plant division. Here is a brief rundown of this year's winners:

'Tidal Wave Silver' is a new petunia that can be grown as a cascading or trellised plant. It can also be grown as a mounded plant. How it will grow depends upon spacing. Close spacing will induce these plants to grow taller while farther spacing will produce mounded plants. These petunias feature silvery-white flowers with deep purple eyes.

'Black Magic Rose' is a new geranium that has black-green leaves with a narrow green leaf edge or margin. Featuring vivid pink flowers with white eyes, the contrast is stunning. These geraniums are reputed to perform well all season long and do best in full sun. They are great in beds or containers.

'Jaio Scarlet' is a new vinca with a new color. This vinca is scarlet with a white contrasting eye and is low-maintenance. It is also does well in full sun.

'Ultima Morpho' is a pansy that features blue upper petals and yellow lower petals in the same colors as the Morpho butterfly. It is compact and floriferous, and has a long season of bloom. This is excellent for containers and for spring and fall gardens.

'Lavender Wave' is the newest of the 'Wave' series of petunias. Short and broad in habit, this petunia is good for bedding use as well as for container use. It is also low-maintenance, requiring no cutback or pruning, and features a long season of bloom, up to frost.

'Cherokee Sunset' is a new perennial variety of rudebeckia that can flower from seed the first season. The plants display yellow, gold, bronze, orange, and mahogany-colored flowers. The plants are about 2-1/2 feet tall and spread to about twelve inches. In some areas, they can successfully overwinter. They are excellent for cut flower use.

'Sparkler Blush' is a compact and bushier form of cleome. It sports pink flowers and grows to about three feet in height and spread, a bit shorter than traditional cleome. It is reported to do well in summer heat and drier soil conditions.
