This time of year, I start longing for flowers. It's not just that I got a bouquet for Valentine's Day - I want to see those real, bright, simple flowers that grow in the out-of-doors. The little ones on plums, peaches and cherry trees. I miss the forsythias that bloomed in March where I grew up in new York, the purple mimosas from my first college days in San Diego, and those white dogwoods and cherries waiting for the warmth here in Flagstaff, AZ.

Depending on where you live, you can start forcing (or think about forcing) local woody branches into leaf and bloom.

This article, written for the Living Simply section of the Eco-Home and Garden hub, tells you how: Forcing Winter Branches into Flower.

Just FYI, here is a short list of great trees to try forcing:

  • Apricot
  • Cherry
  • Peach
  • Plum
  • Crabapple
  • Apple
  • Nectarine
  • Quince

  • Mimosa
