Pre-Spring Preparation and Weed PreventionWhere I am now, I can go outside and place paper and compost now. It's been 60-70 degrees a few times. January has been extremely warm here and it's not supposed to be. I hear February is going to freeze though, so I better get my paper down and fast. It's been in the 40's and 50's more often than not. I've gone out and tossed my compost pile a few times, I've put my tomato plants outside during the day. These are the same tomatoes that I brought indoors in October because it got cold. They have been blooming and fruiting all winter long in front of a bay window. But I have white flies on them now either from existing eggs on the leaves that I didn't notice, or because the weather has been so warm that they got in through an open door. I'll probably just let them go and start some new ones. Maybe I'll put the new babies beside the Teddy Bear sunflowers that are blooming on the windowsill. Those are my four year-old son's babies. It must get pretty warm there during the day if they are blooming indoors. For those of you still under ice, you will get your chance to battle the weeds early. Once you are able to place the plastic or paper combo, it only takes a few weeks until time to till the soil to stop those weeds. Good luck and happy gardening.
